It’s the common name for tropical fruit “Garcinia gummi-gutta”, mainly found in Indonesia and Kerala, in southern India. It is also referred to as “Vadakkan puli” in various Ayurvedic decoction literature. Its used as a souring agent in malabar curries, hence locally referred to as “Malabar Tamarind”. Vadakkan Puli in Malayalam ( language used in Kerala) means “Northern Tamarind”. Puli also means “sour”.
Traditionally, the fruit rind is used as a laxative to cure digestion related illnesses. In 2012, Dr. Oz promoted Garcinia cambogia extract as a “magic” weight-loss aid. and has now become a very popular appetite suppressant and fat burner supplement. Though, its been used for its medicinal properties it is yet to be clinically proven to cause substantial weight loss. Existing scientific evidence only suggests a possible 1 kilogram (2.20lb) weight loss.
