Very Low-Calorie Diet (VLCD) is a diet which provides less than 800 calories per day through food and dependent on supplementation to for essential nutrients and minerals. These diets were prescribed to morbidly obese individuals during to the 80’s and would last 3-5 weeks depending the condition of the patients.
The nutritional value for the diet are chosen as per the RFO formula devised by UCLA center for human nutrition. It also adds that such a diet has the same effect as starvation and tricks the body into reducing the appetite.
