It is famously used in a beverage called “Mate” popular in South American countries and is known for their health benefits. It is tree that grows across several countries in the Americas including Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina but it is said to be first cultivated by Guarani and Tulu tribe in southern Brazil.
The beverage is prepared with free leaves of the plant and warm water ( not to boil in water ). It is sold as a marquee ingredient in many dietary supplements as it contains xanthines: caffeine, theobromine and theophylline which have hypocholesterolemic effects to increase lipid (fat) metabolism.
